The Lion and Lobster

We've been trying to find an excuse to go the Lion and Lobster restaurant in Hove for quite a while now after a failed attempt on my housemates Birthday. However, as another of my housemates birthdays approached we were on the ball and booked a table.

Not going to lie, it was St. Patricks day, and I was already a bit wobbly when I turned up to meet the housemates for dinner.

The restaurant is above the pub, which also does food, but not quite as posh, and the pub always seems to be manically busy. It's a little bit annoying to push through hoards of pub goers and up the narrow stairs to the restaurant, that also lead to the smoking terrace. Once you get the the entrance to the restaurant area you have to sort of awkwardly wait in the way for someone to come and seat you, however, once sat it's great.
We were lucky and got a cosy corner next to a fireplace. Gold frames fill the wall and old books sit on the mantle and a couple of candles flickering on our table add to the atmosphere. I can't say I was perfectly behaved, and being tipsy topics of conversations were moving on to things a little less savoury but hey, we're 20 and loving life, and conversations at home are MUCH worse.

As for service, most staff were friendly, but drinks took longer than they should, (10 minutes to pick up a bottle of wine and 4 glasses) but hot bread rolls arrived promptly to keep up busy after we'd ordered, which were nice, with generous butter portions. The food came out in a reasonable time, 2 orders of Sea Bass, one venison pie and I had the Huss. The fish was cooked brilliantly but everything else was mediocre.

For the price the food was nice, although I can't say that it's my favourite restaurant, and the drinks menu was a little pricy for standard things, but a fiver for a deliciously creamy Irish Coffee at the end was well worth it at the end, (maybe just to tip me over the edge and time to call it a night).

And a big Happy Birthday to Lauren! Chin Chin.

  1. Oh sounds like quite a nice place, although I'm not going to be rushing there now, mediocre, is not what anyone really wants, for a special occasion. Squiffy and tiddly or not!
